Supermarkets I went to had already been stripped bare & Gas prices are up $ .30 in just the last few days !!

I made a post in my football thread about how the season opener between the Dolphins and Buc's is being moved or moved up just in case and they have some pretty reliable information to make their determination so it doesn't look promising but I hope that it has a chance to change course before making land.

I know that hurricanes are nothing new to the area but my thoughts are with all involved and I hope all stay safe.

NFL considers moving Dolphins' opener against Bucs

MIAMI (AP) - For the Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the season might begin sooner than expected, thanks to Hurricane Irma.

The NFL is considering moving the Dolphins-Bucs opener in Miami to another site or earlier this week because of the hurricane, a person familiar with the discussions said Monday. The person confirmed the discussions to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the league and teams aren't talking publicly about the options.

Switching the game to Thursday or Friday is being considered, the person said, because Irma could threaten South Florida over the weekend. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. EDT Sunday.


Playing the game at another site Sunday is also being discussed, the person said. The teams share the same bye week in November, but would prefer to avoid moving the game to that weekend, because it would mean both teams would play 16 weeks in a row.

If the game is moved to earlier this week, the decision must be made by Tuesday because of the logistics involved, the person said. The decision will be made by the league with input from the teams, the person said.

"We will monitor the situation throughout the week and remain in close communication with both clubs and local officials," said Michael Signora, vice president of football communications for the NFL.

Dolphins coach Adam Gase said he has received updates on the status of the game but declined to discuss options.

"They tell us when to play and show up," Gase said. "We just kind of wait and see right now."

Another concern for the Dolphins is potential damage to their stadium. A new canopy added last year was built to withstand a Category 4 hurricane.

Irma is now cat 5. 175 mph surface winds. Last projection has it just north of Cuba.

 

I just hope that Irma will not do to Florida what Harvey did to Houston. If we remember that hurricanes are not uncommon along the US Gulf Coast it helps a bit, but the level of destruction seems to be increasing over time - not good.

 

If it runs straight on----some of it will hit Texas again.....

 

If it stays a Cat5 then it's gonna rip someone a new one. Maybe lots of someones. Let's hope it at least weakens.

 

Any possibility, in your mind, that the more destructive qualities of recent hurricanes might be related to that phenomena many people call "global warming", although I suspect severe climate change is a more accurate term. Of course, remember if we are looking at such phenomena, it is a trend which will not change immediately. Gee, in the years of my childhood I felt so optimistic!

It isn't really looking too good for Florida right now. The last reports I am seeing are that Irma is moving north east and may miss the Gulf but make landfall in south eastern Florida and might even move up the east coast. But nobody is sure yet. But one thing everybody seems to agree on this is a record Hurricane.

While there are also two other storms forming in the Atlantic that might turn into Hurricanes headed this way.

 

Reminds me of the Bush II years when Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas got all fucked up. Another hurricane forming behind Irma. Wild fires raging in the west.

One thing. Thought Republicans are against handouts? Hurricane and fire is freedom, America.

1969 hurricane Camille in Mississippi. Around two pm we were ordered to clear out of my on post housing. Young man with a shotgun knocked and the door and said 15 minutes and I will be back to make you go. The two of us hauled ass to the shelter and spent the night. Winds of 200 mph killed 122 people and some more missing. The military enforced martial law with deadly force authorized. Took damn near Christmas to even start getting normal. It was August 17, 1969. Cat 5. We were lucky. Got by with no injuries. Will not live on a coast if you paid me.

as the strongest storm ever recorded in the Atlantic ,
and strongest anywhere around the world this year.

One has to ask ,
IF this is part of a global climate trend ,
are some areas becoming practically uninhabitable ,
before sea level rise has time to make them so.
