I lived in Chicago for 4 years, frequently walked around after dark, and visited poor neighborhoods multiple times. Never got mugged or anything of that nature, I'm as white as can be.

People only need to worry if they make themselves look like a target. If you look scared, because you have predisposed views of an area that you happen to be in, you are more likely to get mugged than someone who is relaxed, aware, and confident.

 

If all I know about someone is that the person is a member of a group I will evaluate that person by the characteristics of the group. If the group is known to be dangerous, that will effect my evaluation. That is prudence.

Before I like a young Moslem man he will have to convince me that he opposes Islamic terrorism and that he would have informed on the 9/11 terrorists, even if they were friends and relatives.

Before I like a young black man, or even feel safe in his presence, he will have to convince me that he is not a violent street criminal. Most whites feel exactly the same way, Kimiko, although many are hypocritical about it. Their behavior gives them away.

Even Jesse Jackson said, "There is nothing more painful to me at this stage in my life than to walk down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking about robbery. Then look around and see somebody white and feel relieved.... After all we have been through. Just to think we can't walk down our own streets, how humiliating."

 

I actually don't know, but did the people who hijacked the planes even have on Muslim garb, or American?

And yes the vast majority of people aren't violent, hell if we judged people based on their past I'd be more scarred of Christians if I was a Muslim, than the other way around.

 

Why would anyone have cause to worry when seeing a street named after the Protestant reformer of the 16th century. I hear they are lovely people who will more than likely ask you in for a slice of cake. Maybe RK doesn't like cake???

I am confident these assertions are correct. Unfortunately, they are not substantiated with links to the source. On a matter like this I trust statistics compiled by the Justice Department, and the FBI.

Before my main point I would just like to say that I generally vote republican and am saying this from a conservative's perspective. That being said I don't see how NPR did anything wrong here. Now, aloooooot of stuff they say and do is reprehensible at best and treasonous at worst, but in this case they are well within their constitutional rights. If it were a different job it would be another matter. Say if a manufacturer fired a production worker for talking about their own political views outside of work. That would be wrong and probably involve a lawsuit. In this case, however, the man's job hinged on his public persona. If you do something that affects the parameters of your specific job then of course your boss can fire you. Freedom of speech only applies to the government vs the people. In a private corporation the rules are what the owners say they are(as long as they don't cross any current laws that is).

As far as what he said. Well, the same kind of thing happened after WWII. Americans of German and Japanese decent were persecuted because people were scared. In every case it was wrong. Needless racism and hate exploded across the nation because people blamed a type rather than the actual group. If an old guy came up to me and told me he used to be a proud member of the Nazi regime then I would probably call the cops and see if he was wanted for war crimes. If he told me he was a German/Jewish Catholic(Hitler's race and religion) then I would say that's interesting and leave it at that. To this commentator I would advise that if he ever got on a plane with members of the Taliban then he should be nervous. But if it's a lady wearing a scarf on her head and guy with a huge beard then he can probably relax. Millions of people look like that and only a few of them are out to kill you

 

My point is that statistics don't tell the whole story. Your initial comment implies that blacks are so racist that they commit crimes against white people whereas whites arent racist at all because they only commit crimes against whites. Obviously that is utter bollocks.

If you think I wanted a list of statistics to back up your claim then you are wrong. What you claim is obviously and undeniably true, but to just post that sentence without context (not statistics!) is crass and inciteful.

 

What do you mean by "context?" Are you suggesting that there is any justification at all for black on white crime?

Also, I never stated that whites never commit crimes against blacks. I am sure that every now and then a white mugger mugs a black person. It is usually the other way around.

 

The context explains the social background, history, segregation etc etc etc etc you idiot. There is no justification for it but there are certainly valid historical, political and social reasons for it. Are you that stupid? Really?

 

Blacks have a high crime rate everywhere in the world they live. The excuse of "white racism" is getting old and tiresome.

Also, blacks are better off in the United States than in Africa. We whites are not better off because there is a large black population here. If there were no of very few blacks in the United States our crime rate would be much lower. So would the expense of our criminal justice and welfare systems. Our inner cities would be vibrant and safe. Because white flight to the suburbs would not have happened, we would be less dependent on automobile transportation, and consequently less dependent on oil imports.

I know. I know. "We" brought them over here in chains. (I put "We" in quotes because none of my ancestors participated in the slave trade in any way.) We (no quotes necessary) are being collectively punished.

 

Would a black man feel nervous if he were to encounter either of these groups on a lonely street?

As I have already pointed out, Jesse Jackson has admitted that he is afraid of young black men. He has also pointed out that the number of blacks lynched since the end of the Civil War is less than the number of blacks killed every year by other blacks.
